A Legacy of Excellence:The Department of Physics at Gossner College, Ranchi.

Established in 1975, the Department of Physics at Gossner College, Ranchi, stands as a testament to decades of academic dedication and growth. Under the visionary leadership of its first head, Mr. S.C. Gupta, the department embarked on a journey to impart quality education in the realm of physics.

In its initial stages, the department offered courses at both the Intermediate and Graduation levels, laying the foundation for a solid academic framework.

In July 1976, Dr. Ratan Sengupta assumed the role of Head of Department, infusing new energy and insights into the academic ecosystem. Dr. Sengupta tenure was marked by a commitment to excellence and a steadfast dedication to nurturing young minds in the pursuit of scientific knowledge.

The year 1979 marked a significant milestone with the addition of Dr. M. Dey , a good teacher in the field, who would later take on the mantle of Head of Department in 1986 following Dr. Sengupta's departure.

In July 1983, the department welcomed Dr. Rajeev Asthana, a luminary in the field, a distinguished scholar whose contributions to the field of physics would leave an indelible mark. Dr. Asthana's journey was highlighted by his appointment as Head of Department in August 2010, a position he has held with unwavering dedication.

Throughout the years, the department has been fortunate to have esteemed educators like Mr. B.L. Bhakta, who joined in 1989, and Dr. B. Prajapati and Dr. Y.N. Mahto, both of whom became integral members of the department in 1992. Mr. Danish Ashish Tete joined as Lab bearer in July 2016 after the retirement of R. Dungdung who looked after the laboratory since 1975. Dr. Bela Purty joined the department in July 2023. Mr. Rakesh Pandey and Mr. Deepak Deogharia joined the department in April 2023 as supporting staff. Their combined expertise and passion for teaching have enriched the academic environment, leaving an indelible mark on generations of students.

A significant milestone was reached in 2018 with the introduction of the Post-Graduate program (M.Sc.) in Physics. This addition marked a quantum leap in the department's offerings, providing students with an opportunity to delve deeper into the realms of theoretical and applied physics.

The physics department has a high class physics laboratory which is dedicated to the advancement of physics knowledge and experimentation. It boasts cutting-edge equipments, precision instruments, and advanced technologies for conducting in various branches of physics. It is equipped with all the high class equipments and apparatuses of undergraduate and postgraduate practicals prescribed in the curriculam. The laboratory is characterized by rigorous safety protocols, meticulous record - keeping , and culture of excellence in scientific inquiry.

In February 2013, Mr. B.L. Bhakta became the Head of Department and steered it nicely until July 2020.

Dr. Rajeev Asthana once again took on the role as the leader and resumed his position as Head of Department in August 2020, and is continuing to inspire and guide the next generation of physicists and steering the ship with characteristic wisdom and foresight Today, the Department of Physics at Gossner College, Ranchi, stands as a beacon of academic excellence, nurturing a culture of inquiry and discovery. Its journey, marked by dedicated leadership and a commitment to the highest standards of education, is a testament to the enduring legacy of knowledge and learning.
