Gossner College, Ranchi is one of the premier institutions which was conceived with the primary objective of imparting quality education to Tribal young men and women, as well as socially, economically backward and underprivileged and privileged communities of this region. It is one of the premier centres of higher education in the state of Jharkhand. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate learning programs in Science, Commerce and Arts.

Department of Philosophy of Gossner College was established in 1971 along with the other departments of Arts Faculty. This department was established with an objective of providing a platform for excellence in academic growth in philosophical knowledge and reasoning power. The Department of Philosophy is a dynamic and growing department with faculties dedicated to providing quality education. The department offers Honours (core / major) course in BA (under graduation). The department also offers a Ph.D. program in different areas in Philosophy. The students are monitored and evaluated by regular class tests, assignments, mid and end semester exams. Furthermore lectures (beyond classrooms) are also organised. This gives the students an opportunity to interact with the eminent academicians and professors.

The department has produced many University Toppers and Gold Medalists in UG program. Many students have qualified UGC NET / JRF and various competitive exams to pursue higher studies and serve the nation by joining different services.

The very first head of this department was Dr N N Thakur. He was also one of the founder members of the college. He also held the post of Bursar in the college for a long time. Another faculty of the department was Late Dr Rev C A B Tirkey. The third faculty is Dr Jaipal Kachchhap. At present he is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. At present Dr Pradip Kumar Gupta is the Head of the Department. Another working faculty of the department is Dr Binod Ram.

The department offers a vibrant atmosphere to the students and faculties to nurture the spirit of philosophical studies and to pursue research in a highly encouraging environment. The faculty members of the department also inculcate the competitive spirits among the students to face the challenges in life.
