The Science faculty of Gossner College started in the year 1975 and the Department of Mathematics was established in the same year. Bachelor’s degree course in Mathematics Honours started within a few years of inception of the department along with courses in Intermediate class.

Dr. Sudhir Mishra was the first Head of the Department. Later Dr B. R. Soni and Dr. S.R. Mahto joined the department as faculty members. They all retired serving and contributing to the Department for nearly four decades. The College and the Department reached greater heights under their able guidance leading the department and the Science faculty as Dean (Science).

Subsequently, Prof A.K. Lal, Prof E. Purty, Dr. S.N. Topno, Dr. Dinesh Prasad & Dr. Sumant Kumar joined as faculty members of the department. Dr. S.N. Topno left the college to join P.G. Department of Mathematics, Ranchi University a few years back.

Presently Prof A.K. Lal is the Head of the Department. Prof Elani Purty of the Department is also serving as Prof- InCharge of Gossner College. Dr. Dinesh Prasad and Dr. Sumant Kumar are the permanent faculty members of the Department.

From the year 2017 college introduced the 3-Year Bachelor degree program in CBCS (Choice Based Credit System). Afterward, according to U.G.C. and Ranchi University directions, the College introduced NEP 2020(National Education Policy 2020). The College also started a Master’s degree program in Mathematics in the year 2018.

So presently the mathematics department is running both the U.G. and P.G. Courses.

The department has produced many University Toppers, Gold Medallists in both Graduate and Post Graduate degree programs. Every year students of the department qualify for competitive exams like IIT-JAM, CSIR-UGC(NET/JRF), etc to pursue higher studies and contribute to the country by joining different services.

The department/College regularly conducts Seminars, Workshops, and Guest lectures by subject experts and distinguished persons.

For the benefit of students, Remedial Classes and Doubt Classes are scheduled frequently. The faculty members of the mathematics department work hard and try to do their best to train and groom the students for better employability and also to become good citizens of the country. The Academic records of the College are becoming better year by year due to efforts put in by the teachers, Students, and the support of the college administration.
