The Science faculty of Gossner College, Ranchi started in the 1975 and Department of Geology established with an objective of providing Geological knowledge of various minerals and fuel resources of Jharkhand to students.

The department offers core courses in undergraduate and Master level affiliated to Ranchi university .B.Sc degree course in Geology honors’ started in 1988 and P.G Program in Geology started in 2018.

The department has produced University Toppers and qualify various competitive entrance examination. The department has been initiated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, H.N.Kundu( Later in mines of Geology ,GOJ) and DR. Amarendra Thakur was the head of department . Amaresh Chandra Mishra and C.R.Nawal Lugun joined the department as faculty members in 1988. The department attained greater heights by contributing idea of Earth science as the state rich of minerals and fuel resources.

Prof. A.C. Mishra is the head of department after retirement of Dr. A.Thakur in 2020. Dr. Shyam Lal Singh as a guest faculty to assist classes since 2021. Dr.Abhishek Topno joined the department in 2023 .

The department regularly conducts seminars workshop related geological activity and Excursion trips to guide students about different geological sites within state and outside state. The Academic records of department are becoming better year by year due to support of college management.
