Gossner College, Ranchi was established in 1971. The Department of Geography received permanent affiliation for Degree Course with Ranchi University, Ranchi in the year 1982.

The pioneer faculty in the department were Prof. Ignes Kujur and Dr. Ashalata Linda. In the year 1982 under the headship of Dr.Ashalata Linda and faculty members Prof. M. Lakra and Prof. Sabya Roy first batch graduated from the Department of Geography, Gossner College, Ranchi. In the year 1989 Prof. C.A.P. Tirkey joined the department and total members became 4 (four). And in the year 2002 – 2012 Prof. Sabya Roy paved a great path for students as a Head and introduced 2 new members – (1) Prof. Amardeep Topno and (2) Prof. Divya Ratan Kongari. After her retirement, Prof. C.A.P. Tirkey took over the Headship and is currently exploring new ways and techniques to enlighten the students and teachers with his vast experience and knowledge. The teaching is done by permanent faculties and some guest faculties also.

The department has its own class rooms, laboratory, library, store-room and faculty-room with ample materials for teaching. As required by the University the department conducts theoretical lectures, practical teaching Field Survey, Geographical Tour, seminars and so on for teaching the students. From 2018 the Post Graduation has been introduced through the University under its guidelines.

The department aims to help students to develop their academic skills and abilities. Over the years students have established themselves in the field of Geography. Many have qualified in UGC-NET-JRF and other such examinations. Some are serving in the area of Geography in teaching, survey and related fields in government and private sectors, some have been serving in other areas and others are seeking opportunities to give their service to the society.
