The Department of Urdu was established in 1971. The Department’s main objective is to spread awareness about literary and cultural importance and relevance of the Urdu culture, language and literature in India and around the world. It aims to promote the Urdu language as the language of knowledge, and Urdu literature as the literature of values specially human values that can withstand the buffeting forces of time. It aims at carrying out original research to develop the field of knowledge. The Department offers B.A. in Urdu, Diploma and Certificate courses to promote Urdu learning. The thrust research areas of the Department are: The Study of Modern Culture, Language & Literature, Jharkhand’s Language, Culture and Literature, Linguistics, Translation and new approaches in the field of literary criticism.

Approx 500 students have graduated from the Department of Urdu since 1971. Most of them are working in various field. Dr. Rashid Anwar is working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Urdu of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Dr. Sarwar Sajid is also working in Department of Urdu of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh as an Assistant Professor.

The Department of Urdu of Gossner College Ranchi has also produced popular Poets and story writers. Dr. Wahab Danish, the founder Teacher of the college, was a great poet of Modernism. Dr. Sarwar Sajid, Dr. Rashid Anwar Rashid, Dr. Anwar Iraj and Asfar Jamil are well known poets of Post modernism and contemporary literary poets of Urdu Ghazals.
