The Department of English was established in 1971 and it received permanent affiliation for Degree Coursewith Ranchi University in the year 1973. The department has grown from strength to strength over the years and is one of the biggest departments in the college at present.

From 2017 onwards the department adopted the CBCS syllabus as instructed by Ranchi University and switched to six semesters instead of three annual exams. It has now adopted the Four Year Under Graduate Programme (FYUGP) with eight semesters under NEP from 2022. In addition to BA English Degree the department now offers Post Graduate Degree in English from 2018. The department also fulfils the responsibility of teaching the compulsory ‘English Communication’ course across all three faculties - Arts, Science and Commerce.

There are six permanent faculty members and one guest faculty with specializations in fields as diverse as Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, British Literature, Translation, Literature from the Margins, Afro- American Literature, Black Feminist Literature and Linguistics. All faculty members are involved with research and publications and three teachers have scholars registered for PhD research under their supervision.

The department conducts regular guest lectures and seminars where students are provided with opportunities to interact with recognised scholars and intellectuals. Students are involved with responsibilities related to organising departmental programmes in order to help develop their leadership skills. Remedial classes are held after regular classes where students are encouraged to discuss their problems. Our mentoring tradition ensures that the department provides a good support system to all. Students are provided with ample opportunities to showcase their skills and talents in order to promote all round development.

The department aims to help students develop their academic skills and abilities which are required in the professional world along with developing all round personalities. Over the years our students have qualified for administrative and college teaching positions etc through various competitive examinations. Many have qualified in UGC-NET – JRF, CAT, GMAT, XAT, CUET and similar exams and are pursuing studies and research in higher institutions. Some have secured executive positions in prestigious institutions across India. Our students are placed as teachers in some of the best government and private schools of the state and taking forward our aim of nation building.
