The Department of Economics is one of the constituent departments of Gossner College, Ranchi University, Ranchi. It was established on 1971 and received permanent affiliation from Ranchi University in year 1973, with its then Head S.B Mahto took the responsibility to spread the essence of economics.

It attracts students at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is rich in its diversity, comprising of students from different states and backgrounds. The department has long tradition of imparting education and promoting research. Gossner College offers an Honours course and Masters course in Economics. It inculcates critical thinking amongst the student as well as familiarity with the Economics of Environment. The activities promoted by the department are focused on providing an environment that endorse a platform of opportunities to the students to be fruitful to for their academic as well as for society.

The department regularly hold regular classes, tests, seminar, assignments, competitions, debates, guest lectures and micro teaching which efficiently nurtures the students to pursue leadership and management responsibilities.
