Department of Bangla
Rabindranath Tagore has written in the treatise titled “Shikshaar Sangikaran” – “Mother tongue is like breast-feeding”. Mother tongue is the holder and carrier of culture. Gossner College is such an educational institution, where mother tongue has been given a special place. Since the inception of the college, mother tongues like Bangla, Urdu, Kurukh, Mundari, Santhali and Nagpuri etc. have been taught here.
The first professor of Bangla department was Dr. S. C. Canton. Under the supervision of the first principal of the college, Nirmal Minz, he contributed in a project titled "Self Study Identity and Resources" (September 1973). Since then, teaching and learning of Bangla language started smoothly. Since the 70s, students of Commerce, Arts and Science departments have started studying Bangla as M.I.L. From this time onwards, students started including Bangla language and literature as an allied/subsidiary subject . In the 80s, an honours course in Bangla language and literature was started.
Even at present teaching of Bangla language is continuing in the college.I hope that the Bangla department will achieve greater heights in the future.
